Volunteer
Shetland Pride (SCIO) couldn't operate without the amazing contribution and dedication of its volunteers. We don't have any paid staff, so we rely heavily on the good will and support of the local community to be able to do the things we do. If you would like to get involved with Shetland Pride (SCIO), take a look at some of the ways you can get involved below.
Become a Member of the Board - help shape the direction and future of Shetland Pride (SCIO).
Trustees are responsible for the overall governance of the charity. The main duties are to make sure the organisation remains consistent with the purposes of the charity, and that it follows legal stipulations set out in the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005. While the role you would be taking on is a serious one, you will have guidance and support from the rest of the committee, and other organisations such as VAS are always on hand to help!!
A new committee is elected at our Annual General Meeting (AGM), which will be held sometime before the end of the year. If you would like to know more, or put your name forward for a position on the board, please email gary.mouat@shetlandpride.co.uk or wayne.leask@shetlandpride.co.uk.
Join the Volunteer list for Shetland Pride 2024!!
It may seem like a while away, but preparations generally start well in advance of the event taking place. If you have an idea of how Shetland Pride could be improved, why not help put that into action by putting your ideas and suggestions forward now. Similarly, if you fancy volunteering to help out at Shetland Pride 2024, why not add your name to the list now and we'll get in touch nearer the time. This doesn't have to be a solid commitment that is set in stone, just enables us to make sure we can call on as many folk as possible when the time comes.
The volunteer roles that typically need filled on the day include: volunteers to help at our Pride workshops in the week running up to Pride; Parade Marshals; Stewards at our Pride Village event; and Stewards at our evening party. This list is by no means exhaustive, and there are many other events we would like to host at Shetland Pride 2024, but we can't do them without the likes of good people like you.
Please contact wayne.leask@shetlandpride.co.uk if you have any questions.
Volunteer to help make Shetland Pride much more than a one time event in Shetland's calendar - help enourage more LGBTQ+ Spaces throughout the year!!!
There is a distinct lack of spaces and opportunities for LGBTQ+ people in Shetland to meet up and socialise. The aim is to try and encourage venues such as pubs, clubs, cafe's, and restaurants around Shetland to put on events that bring the LGBTQ+ community together. We feel it's important that the LGBTQ+ community have access to these types of spaces because it allows them to meet with likeminded people, and provides a safe environment for people to come and just be themselves.
Like everything we do, these wouldn't be intended to be solely for the LGBTQ+ community, allies are always welcome to join too!! It is our sincere hope that it will better help normalise LGBTQ+ issues throughout the population, and strenghthen connections throughout the wider Shetland community.
If you would like to volunteer to help at these events, or have an idea of an event that you think we could support you with, please get in touch through email at gary.mouat@shetlandpride.co.uk or sarah.cooper@shetlandpride.co.uk.
